Oddly enough, you still only really get to know three characters, mostly Wahlberg’s. The acting is top notch, especially Russell and Malkovich are great. The film tries to give a sense of the daily mundane conversations and routines on board, which mostly works. It really shines when the shit literally hits the fan, though. The action is pretty breath-taking and unique enough, considering there wasn’t an oil rig catastrophe film yet. Oddly enough, it’s already over soon after. You can’t blame a film for sticking close to actual events and not pushing fake drama into the story, but ultimately I expected more. The consequences for nature are merely hinted at with some text in the very end. Unfortunately, characterizations are weak and there aren’t many reasons to care about the figures involved. It often follows the stale disaster movie template of hero goes off and helps people in a major disaster, while worried wife stays at home listening to radio or phone. It doesn’t break away much to set itself as a distinguishing force in the genre. The story follows the workers on an offshore oil rig as they encounter problems with a recently drilled well, leading to a blowback that threatens to destroy the rig and kill everyone on it. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, and Kate Hudson, the film has a solid cast that gives some strong performances. And director Peter Berg does an impressive job at capturing the intensity and chaos of the situation. Additionally, the film refrains from making moral judgments or villainizing anyone, and instead allows the audience to come to their own conclusions. The pacing is a little slow and the plot is kind of hard to follow at times (with all the technical talk about drilling), but once the disaster hits it becomes incredibly compelling. Deepwater Horizon is a powerful film that looks at the heroism that arose in a time of crisis.
